About the album

Vince Staples has never been one to pad a guest list, and on Cry Baby he goes it alone again, with nobody else on the mic from start to finish. It's his first album as an independent artist, put out through Loma Vista and his own Section Eight Arthouse label, and it sounds like an artist enjoying the freedom.

The Long Beach rapper leans into rock and punk energy this time, and the songs hit hard and fast. Lead single "Blackberry Marmalade" arrived first, its video teasing the album with a red hat bearing the title, and "White Flag" and "Cotton" followed in the weeks before the album came out. "Go! Go! Gorilla" and "The Big Bad Wolf" show off his sharp eye and dry delivery, and "Tulsa, OK" closes the record on a weighty note.

Staples played five of the songs for a Tiny Desk Concert in July 2026 and takes the record on the road across North America this fall. A red hat started all this, so we've filed the red vinyl under fitting tribute rather than coincidence.
