Timber Timbre's 2011 album of spooky, swampy, cinematic blues, with "Black Water," "Bad Ritual" and "Woman."
This Arts & Crafts pressing is on 180g vinyl with a printed inner sleeve and a download card. The album made the ten-title shortlist for the 2011 Polaris Music Prize.
The name comes from a timber-framed cabin outside Bobcaygeon, Ontario, where Taylor Kirk made his first recordings, and that woodsy, lamplit feeling never left. By the fourth album Kirk had a proper band around him, with Mika Posen on strings and Simon Trottier on guitar and keys, and the sound grew into something closer to a haunted lounge.
They recorded at Petite Église in Farnham, Québec, and the Treatment Room in Montréal, with Mark Lawson and Kees Dekker at the desk. "Bad Ritual" opens on a slow, sinister piano stomp, "Black Water" is a crooner's lament that later turned up in Russian Doll and For a Good Time, Call..., and "Woman" and "Too Old to Die Young" sway like a 1950s ballad heard through a motel wall.
Exclaim put it neatly in 2011: the guests come and go, but the essence is always Kirk's personal vision. Best played after dark, though we've tried it at noon on a Tuesday and it still gave the shop a pleasant chill.
