![The Roots: Illadelph Halflife (2LP) [DGC / GEFFEN]](https://cdn.shoplightspeed.com/shops/621399/files/60779587/1652x1652x2/the-roots-illadelph-halflife-2lp-dgc-geffen.jpg)
Roots' 1996 third album Illadelph Halflife on 2LP: "What They Do," "Clones," "Concerto of the Desperado" and "Push Up Ya Lighter."
Illadelph Halflife sharpened the Roots' live-band hip-hop into something tougher and broader, and "What They Do" is one of their best-known songs.
Black Thought, Questlove and the Philadelphia crew blend live jazz, soul and funk instrumentation with programmed drums on Illadelph Halflife, with guest MCs and R&B singers including Common.
"What They Do" is a smooth, satirical single, "Clones" is a hard-hitting posse cut, "Concerto of the Desperado" is moody and cinematic, and "Push Up Ya Lighter" grooves with laid-back cool.
