The Doors' 1970 back-to-basics blues rock album in the Rhino High Fidelity series, with "Roadhouse Blues," "Peace Frog" and "Waiting For The Sun."
This Rhino High Fidelity indie exclusive was cut from the original analog master tapes by Kevin Gray, pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal Media and housed in a heavyweight gatefold with an obi and an insert of band recollections. Morrison Hotel reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and No. 12 in the UK.
After the horns and strings of The Soft Parade, the Doors went back to the garage. They booked Elektra Sound Recorders in Los Angeles in November 1969 and made a lean, bluesy record split into two titled halves, Hard Rock Café and Morrison Hotel, with Henry Diltz shooting the cover through the window of a real downtown hotel.
"Roadhouse Blues" opens with one of rock's great boogie riffs, with blues guitarist Lonnie Mack sitting in on bass. "Peace Frog" slides straight into the gentle "Blue Sunday," "Waiting For The Sun" finally arrives two albums after the record named for it, and "Indian Summer" dates back to the 1966 sessions for the debut. "Queen Of The Highway," "Ship Of Fools" and "Maggie M'Gill" round out a set that points toward L.A. Woman. Paul A. Rothchild produced.
Critics welcomed it warmly, and it came a few months after the band played the Toronto Rock and Roll Revival with John Lennon on the bill. The insert in this edition gathers memories from the band and studio staff, so you finally get to hear what really went on in the room, give or take a few details nobody can quite recall.
