Sum 41's 2019 seventh album Order in Decline on hot pink vinyl, with "Out for Blood," "A Death in the Family" and "45 (A Matter of Time)."
This hot pink pressing is a limited edition from Hopeless Records' 30 Years of Hopeless series, pressed in the Czech Republic. AllMusic called it one of the most accomplished albums in their catalogue, and Kerrang! called it their heaviest to date.
Pop punk bands from Ajax, Ontario aren't generally expected to grow up into metal bands, but nobody seems to have told Sum 41. After three years on the road for 13 Voices, they came home with a pile of ideas, finished the music in three weeks, and handed the controls to Deryck Whibley, who produced, engineered and mixed the album himself.
The singles came thick and fast in 2019. "Out for Blood," written by Whibley with Mike Green, kicked things off, followed by "A Death in the Family," "Never There" and "45 (A Matter of Time)." Dave "Brownsound" Baksh and Tom Thacker stack melodic hardcore, alternative metal and punk between their guitars, Jason "Cone" McCaslin and Frank Zummo keep the engine room tight, and "Turning Away," "Heads Will Roll" and "Catching Fire" round out a lean ten songs. Ted Jensen's mastering gives it serious weight.
Slant called the production pitch-perfect, and Distorted Sound found a band showing no sign of leaning on past glories. More than twenty years in, Sum 41 were still turning the amplifiers up rather than down, which our downstairs neighbours have noticed.
