About the album

Brett Anderson, Mat Osman and Justine Frischmann started out spending hours playing Roxy Music, The Smiths and David Bowie songs, then put an ad in NME for a guitarist that ended with a plea for no musos. Bernard Butler answered it, and within a couple of years Melody Maker was calling Suede the best new band in Britain before most people had heard a note.

Side A is the glam-and-grime opening salvo: "The Drowners," "Metal Mickey," "Animal Nitrate" and "So Young," then the sweeping "Stay Together" and "We Are the Pigs." With Richard Oakes and Neil Codling on board, the Coming Up years bring the bright, bouncy hits "Trash," "Filmstar" and "Beautiful Ones," plus the late-night ballad "Saturday Night." The back half carries the story through "Everything Will Flow" and "Can't Get Enough" to the reunion records, with "It Starts and Ends With You," "Outsiders" and "Life Is Golden."

They broke up in 2003, reunited in 2010 and have kept making records that chart high in the UK ever since. Four sides of this, and you'll understand why the 1990s seemed to involve so much eyeliner.
