About the album

Snoop Doggy Dogg was already the most famous unsigned voice in America before this album appeared. His lazy, unhurried flow had stolen scenes all over Dr. Dre's The Chronic, and Death Row rushed to give the Long Beach rapper a record of his own.

Dre produced it, stretching the G-funk sound of rolling P-Funk bass, whining synths and live instruments into a full-length world. "Who Am I (What's My Name)?" and "Gin And Juice" are the hits, "Lodi Dodi" flips Slick Rick and Doug E. Fresh, and "Ain't No Fun (If The Homies Can't Have None)" brings in Nate Dogg, Warren G and Kurupt. "Murder Was The Case" is a dark, cinematic story song, and "Doggy Dogg World" pulls in The Dramatics for a smooth soul turn. Daz Dillinger and Kurupt pop up throughout, giving the album the feel of a whole crew hanging out in the studio.

It went on to sell more than 11 million copies worldwide and made West Coast hip hop the dominant sound of the mid-90s. Snoop has since popped up everywhere from cooking shows to Olympic commentary, though the voice hasn't moved an inch.
