Snoop Doggy Dogg's 1993 debut as a 30th anniversary 2LP set on clear vinyl, cut at 45 RPM, with "Gin and Juice" and "Who Am I (What's My Name)?"
This 30th anniversary 2LP set on clear vinyl runs at 45 RPM and restores the original 1993 track listing for the first time since the album came out. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 806,858 copies in its first week, then a record for a debuting artist.
Most rappers arrive on someone else's album and wait their turn. Snoop Doggy Dogg arrived all over Dr. Dre's The Chronic, stealing scenes on the Deep Cover single and beyond, so by the time his own debut was due the anticipation was enormous. Dre produced Doggystyle in the same G-funk style, and the pair carried West Coast hip hop straight into the mainstream.
"Gin and Juice" is the laid-back summer anthem, "Who Am I (What's My Name)?" the bouncing introduction, and "Lodi Dodi" a smooth flip of Slick Rick and Doug E. Fresh. "Murder Was the Case" gets dark and cinematic, "Ain't No Fun (If the Homies Can't Have None)" brings in Nate Dogg, Warren G and Kurupt, and Tha Dogg Pound, RBX and The Lady of Rage keep the Death Row family close throughout.
The Source and Rolling Stone both counted it among the essential records of the decade, and it sold more than 11 million copies worldwide. Snoop's drawl has never needed raising above a murmur to be heard, a lesson our counter staff are still trying to learn.
