About the album

Snoop Doggy Dogg came back in 1996 as a new father with a new outlook, and he dressed for the part: the cover borrows the look of The Godfather, painted by his cousin Darryl (Joe Cool) Daniel, who also drew Doggystyle. It was the last album under the longer name before he settled on Snoop Dogg. Recording ran from February to October 1996, with Suge Knight as executive producer.

With Dr. Dre gone from Death Row, DJ Pooh steered most of the production, with Daz Dillinger, Soopafly and L.T. Hutton chipping in, and Snoop made his own producer debut on "(O.J.) Wake Up." "Snoop's Upside Ya Head" rides The Gap Band's old-school bounce, "Vapors" reworks Biz Markie's classic, and the title track is pure West Coast swagger. The beats lean on old-school touchstones, sampling Run-D.M.C. and Zapp & Roger along the way. Tupac turns up on "Outro" under the name Makaveli.

Snoop has said Tha Doggfather is the record fans ask him to sign more than any other. If he ever drops by the shop, this is the one we'll hand him.
