About the album

In 1993 Shania Twain was promoting her first album by singing to backing tracks at local gigs. Then a rock producer heard it. Robert John "Mutt" Lange, the man behind AC/DC's and Def Leppard's biggest records, started phoning her long distance; they bonded over her love of rock and his love of country, began writing together, and married that December.

The demos they cut were "less country" than Nashville expected, but Mercury's Luke Lewis let them run with it. "Any Man Of Mine" stomps and struts, "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?" delivers a cheating song with a wink, "(If You're Not In It For Love) I'm Outta Here!" lays down the law, and "You Win My Love" revs up a Lange rocker. Eight singles came off it, each with its own video.

It sold four million copies in its first year and went on to 12 times platinum in the US, setting up everything that followed. Nashville spent the next decade trying to work out how she did it, and we suspect a few of them are still on the phone.
