Why you'll love it

Shadowy Men's first full-length album crams 25 tracks onto one LP, from "I Know a Guy Named Larry" to a hushed "In My Room." The band went on to win the Juno for Instrumental Artist of the Year in 1992.

About the album

Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet always insisted they weren't a surf band, and later put out a box set admitting they might have been after all. Reid Diamond, Brian Connelly and Don Pyle came together in Toronto in 1984, after Diamond and Connelly had made the trip east from Calgary, and spent the 80s putting out singles and EPs on Cargo before this, their first proper album.

Coyote Shivers produced it, most of it at Reaction Studios in Toronto, with two tracks cut at Grant Ave. in Hamilton and "Bang Bang" recorded live, as the sleeve puts it, at Sandra and Bill's house. Connelly's guitar runs through a whole library of Ventures-style twang, "I Know a Guy Named Larry" nicks a big-band swing number, "In My Room" gets a gentle reading, and the titles alone ("Hunter S. Thompson's Younger Brother," "Who Painted Whistler's Mother") are worth the price.

Pyle and Diamond later formed Phono-Comb with Dallas Good of The Sadies, and the band still plays the odd reunion show. The band would like it noted, once again, that none of this is surf music. Noted.
