About the album

Most stars take a breather after a world tour. Rihanna made an album in the middle of one. Talk That Talk was cut between February and November 2011 while the Loud Tour rolled through France, the UK, Norway, Denmark and Germany, and vocal producer Kuk Harrell reckons the sessions touched more than 25 cities. It began life as a planned reissue of Loud before she decided the new songs deserved a record of their own.

She ran the show as executive producer and brought in Calvin Harris, Stargate, Alex da Kid, Chase & Status and No I.D., steering a dance-floor mix of pop and R&B with dubstep, house and a little dancehall underneath. Harris supplies the euphoric rush of "We Found Love," Jay-Z drops in on the title track, "Where Have You Been" went top ten in twenty countries, and "Cockiness (Love It)" later picked up an ASAP Rocky remix.

By 2013 it had sold more than 5.5 million copies worldwide, and the IFPI counted it among the ten best-selling albums on the planet in 2011. Recording an album on a tour bus is apparently excellent for productivity; we tried doing the stock count that way and would not recommend it.
