About the album

Madlib has spent his career inventing bandmates, and Lord Quas is the most famous of them. The high-voiced, mischievous character first turned up on Madlib's private beat tapes in Oxnard, California, music made for himself and a handful of friends' car stereos rather than for the shops. Stones Throw, his long-time label home, put this set together in 2013.

Yessir Whatever rounds up a dozen tracks from about twelve years of the pair's adventures, a few lifted from hard-to-find singles and a few heard here for the first time. "Seasons Change" and "Broad Factor" ride dusty soul loops, "Astronaut" floats, "Catchin' the Vibe" does exactly that, and "Green Power (Original Version)" and "LAX to JFK" round it off with Madlib's loose, crackling beats. The sleeve says they were recorded in Lost Gates, California, some time between the late 1990s and the future.

It plays like a scrapbook from the Quas archive, loose and funny, with plenty of happy detours. Peel back the sticker on the front and you'll find Lord Quas's insides, which turn out to be mostly snacks and weaponry.
