Vancouver indie band Peach Pit's 2017 debut album of "chewed bubblegum pop": "Alrighty Aphrodite," "Being So Normal" and "Tommy's Party." On Columbia.
Peach Pit's debut is a word-of-mouth phenomenon: "Alrighty Aphrodite" and "Tommy's Party" have racked up huge streaming numbers, and the Vancouver band went from local bars to sold-out tours on the strength of these songs.
High school friends Neil Smith and Chris Vanderkooy started Peach Pit in Vancouver as a bit of fun, roped in Peter Wilton and Mikey Pascuzzi, and called what they made "chewed bubblegum pop." It's a perfect description: shimmering, surf-tinged guitar lines, lazy, sun-bleached grooves and Smith's soft, deadpan vocals singing about heartbreak, house parties and the small, sad absurdities of being young.
Being So Normal, their 2017 debut, is where all of it comes together. "Alrighty Aphrodite" and the title track have the kind of hooks that sneak up on you, and "Tommy's Party" became a slow-burning cult hit that turned new fans into lifers. It's a modest little record that turned into a very big deal, and it still sounds like the last warm night of summer.
