About the album

Nipsey Hussle spent the better part of thirteen years building his name the hard way, selling mixtapes himself out of Crenshaw and famously charging $100 a copy for Crenshaw in 2013. Victory Lap was his first major-label album, put out through his own All Money In No Money Out imprint with Atlantic, and it sounds like a man who knew exactly what he'd earned.

The beats are warm, rolling West Coast funk, and the guest list shows the respect he'd built: Kendrick Lamar on "Dedication," YG on "Last Time That I Checc'd," Puff Daddy, The-Dream, CeeLo Green and Marsha Ambrosius. "Hussle & Motivate" bounces with swagger, "Blue Laces 2" looks back on the road so far, "Grinding All My Life" is his mission statement, and "Double Up" rides out on a smooth hook. Nipsey executive produced it himself with his brother Samiel Asghedom and longtime partner Steve Carless.

Pitchfork called it the most gripping record in his catalogue, and his Marathon Clothing store in South LA became a landmark. He believed in owning the shop as well as the record; as a shop that sells records, we heartily approve.
