About the album

Recorded in New York in 1964 and 1965, I Put a Spell on You finds Nina Simone at her most commanding, bringing her jazz, classical and gospel training to pop songs, show tunes and French chansons and making every one of them her own.

The title track turns Screamin' Jay Hawkins' wild cry into something regal and smouldering, "Feeling Good" is the version everyone else has been chasing ever since, "Ne me quitte pas" (sung in French) is heartbreaking, and "Blues on Purpose" is a swinging instrumental. Verve's Acoustic Sounds series gives it audiophile-grade treatment.
