About the album

Canada's own Nelly Furtado decided her third album should be a proper pop record, with Madonna's Ray of Light as her North Star. Interscope boss Jimmy Iovine pointed her to Timbaland, who had already remixed her "Turn Off the Light," and the pair, with protégé Danja, built most of Loose at the Hit Factory in Miami. Before that, she had road-tested ideas with Pharrell, Scott Storch, Swollen Members and K'naan.

"Promiscuous," a flirty back-and-forth with Timbaland, and the hypnotic "Say It Right" both went to No. 1 on the Hot 100 and earned Grammy nominations, while the stomping "Maneater" topped the UK chart and "All Good Things (Come to an End)" ruled Europe. The sound mixes dance, R&B, hip hop, Latin pop and new wave, and "Te Busque," a duet with Juanes, was recorded partly at the Orange Lounge here in Toronto.

It spawned eight singles and a world tour, captured on the concert film Loose: The Concert. For a record called Loose, it's put together with the precision of a Swiss watch, which we suspect was rather the point.
