Molchat Doma's 2017 debut S Krysh Nashikh Domov on yellow vinyl, the Minsk trio's cold, danceable post-punk with "Doma Molchat" and "Lyudi Nadoeli."
This Sacred Bones edition puts the debut on limited yellow vinyl. It's where the Belarusian band's drum machines, chilly synths and deep baritone first came together, a sound that went on to win them fans around the world.
The band's name translates as "the houses are silent," and the debut album's title as "from the roofs of our houses," which tells you a lot about the view. Molchat Doma formed in Minsk in 2017 with Egor Shkutko on vocals, Roman Komogortsev on guitar, synths and drum machine, and Pavel Kozlov on bass and synths.
They put the album out themselves on April 24, 2017, and the German label Detriti Records picked it up later that year. The sound draws on Soviet post-punk, new wave and synth-pop of the 70s and 80s: "Doma Molchat" sets the tone with a pulsing drum machine and Shkutko's deep, deadpan baritone, "Krishi" broods, and "Lyudi Nadoeli" is a dark, bass-heavy dance track. Shkutko sings in Russian, but the mood needs no translation. "Tishina" and "Tekhnologiya" round out a record that sounds like a nightclub in a concrete apartment block.
Their second album Etazhi broke them worldwide in 2020, after "Sudno (Boris Ryzhy)" took off online, and Sacred Bones signed them and brought both records to North American turntables. It turns out that gloom travels very well, provided you can dance to it.
