MF Doom: MM..Food (2LP, 20th anniversary edition) [RHYMESAYERS]

Why you'll love it

This is the 20th anniversary 2LP edition of DOOM's fifth album and the most fun record in his catalogue, a concept album about "things you find at a picnic" that's really about rap beef, snitches and the masked villain's own legend. "Rapp Snitch Knishes", "Hoe Cakes" and "Beef Rapp" are all here.

About the album

Leave it to MF DOOM to make a concept album about snacks. Mm..Food (yes, the title is an anagram of the man's name) arrived on Rhymesayers in November 2004, the same year as Madvillainy, and it might be the purest distillation of DOOM's whole deal: Saturday-morning cartoon samples, lo-fi loops that sound like they were dug out of a thrift-store bin, and rhymes so dense with puns and double entendres that you're still catching new ones on the 50th listen.

Every track title is a food ("Beef Rapp", "Hoe Cakes", "Kon Karne", "Gumbo") but the subject matter wanders wherever DOOM's restless brain wants to go, from rap feuds and snitching to the occasional heartfelt memory. Madlib and Count Bass D chip in, Mr. Fantastik steals "Rapp Snitch Knishes" right out from under everybody, and the whole thing hangs together like a mixtape made by the most gifted weirdo on the block. Twenty years on, it's still a feast.
