Metric's 2003 debut album, the one that went gold in Canada: "Combat Baby," "Dead Disco" and "Succexy." Single LP on Everloving.
Metric's debut went gold in Canada and turned "Combat Baby" and "Dead Disco" into indie-dance staples. It's the sound of the early-2000s Toronto scene at its sharpest, a blueprint for everything the band did next.
Before Fantasies made them festival headliners, Metric were Emily Haines and James Shaw bouncing between Toronto, New York, London and Los Angeles, soaking up new wave, post-punk and art-school electronica. Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? is their first proper album, cut in L.A. with producer Michael Andrews (of Donnie Darko fame), and it crackles with restless, big-city energy.
Haines' sly, cutting vocals sit on top of jittery guitars, buzzy synths and a rhythm section built for dancing: "Combat Baby" and "Dead Disco" became indie-club anthems, "Succexy" is all swagger, and "Calculation Theme" shows off the band's moodier side. It went gold in Canada, which, for a scrappy debut on an indie label, was no small thing.
