Metric's Greatest Hits Volume 1 on limited edition white vinyl, ten songs from the Toronto band with "Help I'm Alive," "Gold Guns Girls" and "Black Sheep."
This limited white vinyl edition comes from the band's own Metric Music International label. It gathers ten songs from across nearly two decades, from "Combat Baby" to "Now Or Never Now," plus a Funhouse acoustic take on "Gimme Sympathy."
Toronto has produced plenty of great bands, and few have made synths and guitars sound quite as sleek as Metric. Emily Haines and James Shaw, along with bassist Joshua Winstead and drummer Joules Scott-Key, became one of Canada's most dependable alternative acts, and this collection is the highlight reel, ten songs on one tidy LP.
"Combat Baby" brings back the wiry new wave of the early days, "Empty" builds from a whisper to a roar, and "Gold Guns Girls" and "Help I'm Alive" are the heart-pounding anthems that made Fantasies such a big record. "Synthetica" and "Breathing Underwater" come from the album that took the 2013 Juno for Alternative Album of the Year, "Cascades" glitters, and "Black Sheep" is the song Brie Larson's band snarls through in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, a film set in Toronto.
The back cover lists an address on Spruce Street, which makes this about as local as a greatest hits album gets. A Volume 1 does suggest a Volume 2, so we've already cleared a space on the shelf.
