30th anniversary edition of Maxwell's 1996 neo-soul classic Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite: "Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)," "Sumthin' Sumthin'" and "Whenever Wherever Whatever."
Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite went double platinum and, along with D'Angelo's Brown Sugar, launched the neo-soul movement. "Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)" is pure bliss.
Brooklyn's Maxwell wrote and produced his debut largely himself, with help from Leon Ware (who wrote for Marvin Gaye) and Wah Wah Watson, and it's a gorgeous concept album about a single romance, from first meeting to proposal, set to silky grooves and his silky falsetto.
"Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)" and "Sumthin' Sumthin'" are timeless, "Whenever Wherever Whatever" is a tender acoustic ballad, and "...Til the Cops Come Knockin'" is a slow-burning showstopper. Thirty years on, it still sounds like candlelight.
