Four Tet's 2005 remixes of five Madvillainy tracks on a 12-inch EP, with "Meat Grinder," "Accordion" and "Money Folder," plus the instrumentals on side B.
This 12-inch EP puts five Four Tet remixes on side A and five instrumentals on side B. It's Kieran Hebden's take on the 2004 MF DOOM and Madlib classic Madvillainy, with a new DOOM verse on "Rhinestone Cowboy."
Madvillainy was already a dense collage of samples, so handing it to Four Tet was a bit like asking a chef to remix a stew. Kieran Hebden took five tracks from the 2004 album and rebuilt them his way, swapping Madlib's loops for his own electronics while keeping MF DOOM's verses front and centre.
"Meat Grinder," "Accordion," "Money Folder" and "Great Day" all get new beds. On "Rhinestone Cowboy," DOOM sampled an interlude from Hebden's set, built a fresh beat from it and recorded a new rap over the top, effectively remixing the remix. Side B gives you the instrumentals, plus a "Shadows of Tomorrow" bonus beat, which makes it a handy one for DJs. It came out on Stones Throw, home of Madvillainy itself, so the remixes stayed in the family.
The first 2005 run came in a plain black sleeve and then stayed out of print for years; this one gets a proper picture cover. The stew, it turns out, remixes beautifully.
