2LP Blue Note Classic Vinyl edition of Madlib's 2003 Shades of Blue, where the beat wizard remixes and replays the Blue Note vaults.
Blue Note handed Madlib the keys to its legendary archive, and he came back with one of the coolest crossover records ever made. Paste called it one of the classic hip hop albums that deserve more attention.
Madlib grew up on jazz records (his uncle is trumpeter Jon Faddis), so when Blue Note invited him to dig through its vaults he jumped at the chance. Shades of Blue mixes his trademark dusty, head-nodding remixes of Blue Note tracks with new versions he played himself under his Yesterdays New Quintet alias.
Horace Silver's "Song for My Father," Wayne Shorter's "Footprints," Herbie Hancock's "Dolphin Dance" and Donald Byrd's "Stepping into Tomorrow" all get the Madlib treatment, with funky interludes in between. It's perfect for a lazy Sunday and a gateway into the Blue Note catalogue for hip hop heads.
