Mac DeMarco's 2012 debut mini-album Rock and Roll Night Club, recorded in his Montreal apartment, with "Only You" and "European Vegas."
Before Salad Days made him an indie hero, the Edmonton-born Mac DeMarco slowed down his voice and made this gloriously sleazy, deeply charming debut.
Picture a lounge lizard crooning through a cheap tape deck in a Montreal walk-up, and you're halfway to Rock and Roll Night Club. Mac DeMarco recorded it in 2011 at his own Jizz Jazz Studios, pitching his vocals way down to play a hopelessly romantic swinger, and Captured Tracks put it out in 2012.
It's a joke he's in on, but the songs are real gems. "Rock and Roll Night Club" oozes, "Baby's Wearing Blue Jeans" and "European Vegas" jangle and wobble, "Only You" is sweet and goofy, and little fake radio-station jingles stitch it all together.
Pitchfork reckoned most of it was laced with a meta joke, and that's half the fun. It's where the Canadian slacker-pop legend began, and it still sounds like a Saturday night with nowhere to be.
