About the album

Lord Finesse is better known to many listeners as the producer behind the boards than the rapper in front of the mic, which is a shame, because The Awakening shows him doing both at full strength. His third album arrived in 1996 with a guest list that reads like a D.I.T.C. family reunion.

Finesse produced most of it himself, cutting tracks at Chung King, Giant and Powerplay in New York and mastering at Sterling Sound. "Hip 2 Da Game" was the single, "Gameplan" got a video with a Big L cameo, and Big L also turns up on the chorus of "Food For Thought." "Speak Ya Peace" and "True And Livin'" carry the posse cuts, while MC Lyte, Akinyele, Showbiz and Kid Capri drop into the interludes. "Actual Facts" was never listed on the original jacket at all; it sat on a promo sticker as a bonus.

Tommy Boy remastered the whole thing for its 25th birthday and gave the beats room to breathe on their own. The instrumentals are a gift to anyone who has ever tried to rap along in the car and quietly got lost by the second verse.
