About the album

The lotus is one of the few plants that blooms in muddy water, and Little Simz took that as her brief. Her sixth album is a fresh start in almost every sense: a new producer, a new circle of collaborators and a record about transformation, written from the same introspective place that made Sometimes I Might Be Introvert such a landmark.

Producer Miles Clinton James, known for his work with Kokoroko, gives her a live, restless sound that pulls in jazz, punk and funk, with strings from Rosie Danvers and Wired Strings. The guest list is a tour of London's finest. Obongjayar and Moonchild Sanelly crash into the lead single "Flood," Michael Kiwanuka and drummer Yussef Dayes join her on "Lonely," Sampha closes things out on "Blue," and Moses Sumney, Miraa May, Yukimi Nagano, Lydia Kitto and Wretch 32 all pass through. "Free" and "Young" are the singles that stick in your head.

Critics called it among her most personal records, a set of diary entries set to some of the boldest beats of her career. If you're keeping score at home, that's six albums and no sign whatsoever of a dip in form, which frankly makes the rest of us look bad.
