Lil Peep & Lil Tracy: Castles I & II Splatter LP Vinyl

Why you'll love it

This splatter vinyl edition puts both of the duo's collaborative EPs on one record. "White Wine" and "Witchblades" are among their most popular songs, and the pair were key voices in the emo rap sound that grew out of SoundCloud.

About the album

Two friends, a few days in Los Angeles in the summer of 2016, and a sound that would ripple through rap for years. Lil Peep and Lil Tracy, both part of the GothBoiClique collective, made the first Castles EP in mid-2016 and put it out on July 4; Castles II followed on February 6, 2017. Peep had already broken through on SoundCloud in 2015 with "Star Shopping."

The songs blend trap drums with emo and lo-fi guitar textures, the two voices trading hooks over hazy, melancholy beats. "Pain" and "Castles" open the set, "White Wine" and "Witchblades" carry the biggest choruses, and "Dying Out West," "Past the Castle Walls" and "Your Favorite Dress" show how much ground they covered in a handful of songs. Peep, raised on Long Island, had already built a following with Crybaby and Hellboy, and Tracy matched him line for line.

Lil Peep became a leading figure of emo rap and an inspiration in alternative youth culture, and these sessions are a big part of why. Eight songs makes for a modest castle by most standards; the queue to get in suggests otherwise.
