Kali Uchis's 2024 Spanish-language album Orquídeas, with "Te Mata," "Muñekita" and "Igual que un Ángel" with Peso Pluma.
Orquídeas debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and No. 1 on Top Latin Albums. It won Latin Pop Album of the Year at the Billboard Latin Music Awards and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Latin Pop Album.
An orchid is a flower that does well in all sorts of climates, which makes it a neat emblem for Kali Uchis. The Colombian-American singer grew up between Virginia and Colombia, and her second Spanish-language album moves just as freely, from bolero and reggaeton to dembow, house and dreamy R&B, all of it held together by that soft, smoky voice.
The guest list is big and well chosen. Peso Pluma joins her on the swooning "Igual que un Ángel," Karol G turns up on "Labios Mordidos," El Alfa and JT bring the dancefloor heat to "Muñekita," and Rauw Alejandro slides into "No Hay Ley Parte 2." "Te Mata" is a slow-burning ballad, "Pensamientos Intrusivos" glides along, and "Dame Beso // Muévete" closes things out in party mode. Tainy, El Guincho, Sounwave and Jam City are among the many hands on the production, and Uchis herself co-produced, so the record holds together beautifully despite the long list of names in the credits.
Critics were quick to call it her finest work; Metacritic logged a score of 88, and Variety ranked it the second-best album of 2024. Fourteen songs, every one of them a reason to move the coffee table.
