About the album

It started at a Toronto bar. Peter Dreimanis heard Leah Fay Goldstein singing with the art-folk group Mothers of Brides at The Communist's Daughter, asked her to make demos with him, and the pair soon built a band around the idea of two very different voices pulling at the same song. Josh Warburton, Danny Miles and Ian Docherty filled out the lineup, and Sleepless Records put out the first ten-song version in October 2012.

That push and pull is the whole engine. "Guns + Ammunition" and "Paper Girl" trade lines back and forth, "The Garden" opens with a swagger, and "Brother" and "Black Lace" show the quieter side. The band toured it hard with Billy Talent, Arkells, Sam Roberts, Weezer and Tegan and Sara, and Island Records took it to American audiences in 2015. Goldstein, the daughter of Toronto Sun columnist Lorrie Goldstein, was credited as Leah Fay in those early years.

At the 2014 Junos the band presented Group of the Year to Tegan and Sara alongside Shad. The sleeve gives Sleepless Records' address as Bulwer Street, a short walk from our Queen West shop, so this one barely needed shipping.
