John Coltrane's 1957 session with the Red Garland Trio, Traneing In, on 180g vinyl, with Paul Chambers on bass and Art Taylor on drums.
This 180g pressing presents the session in mono. Coltrane cut it in one day at Rudy Van Gelder's studio with Red Garland and Paul Chambers, his bandmates in the Miles Davis Quintet, plus Art Taylor.
Records with two names usually have a story, and this one is mostly about cover art. Prestige first put the session out in early 1958 as John Coltrane with the Red Garland Trio, his third album as a leader, then reissued it in 1961 with a new catalogue number, a new cover and the punning title it has worn ever since.
The date was August 23, 1957, and Coltrane was on a roll, playing with total assurance alongside a rhythm section he knew inside out. The title track is a long, relaxed blues that lets everybody stretch, "Slow Dance" shows off his ballad tone, and "Bass Blues" hands the spotlight to Chambers. "You Leave Me Breathless" is pure warmth, while "Soft Lights and Sweet Music" and "Mating Call" take off at a gallop, Garland's block chords keeping everything buoyant and Taylor's brushes and sticks tidy as a pin.
Rudy Van Gelder later remastered the session himself for a CD series in 2007. The record has worn two titles and two covers since 1958, and the music inside hasn't needed a single alteration.
