John Coltrane: Soultrane (Original Jazz Classics) [PRESTIGE / CRAFT]

Why you'll love it

Soultrane is one of the finest of Coltrane's Prestige albums, catching him in peak form and showing off the dense, rapid-fire "sheets of sound" style that changed jazz.

About the album

Recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's Hackensack studio in early 1958, around the time he was playing with Miles Davis on Milestones, Soultrane finds Coltrane leading a superb quartet with pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Art Taylor.

"Good Bait" swings with relaxed confidence, "I Want to Talk About You" is a gorgeous ballad with a stunning solo cadenza, and "Russian Lullaby" is taken at a blistering pace. Five tracks of pure joy.
