Joel Plaskett's 2024 album One Real Reveal, the Halifax songwriter at his most personal: "Rainy Day Janey," "High Summer" and "Iona."
This Turtlemusik pressing comes in a gatefold jacket with a printed inner sleeve carrying the lyrics. Press notes called it his most inward work to date, and the songs back that up, from "Rainy Day Janey" to "Breezy Jane."
Joel Plaskett has spent three decades writing about Halifax, from Thrush Hermit in the 90s through the Emergency and a long run of solo records. One Real Reveal turns the lens around, onto the songwriter himself, in twelve songs recorded between July 2023 and January 2024.
He tracked much of it on his own and the rest in a cross-country string of rooms: with Thomas Stajcer at Fang Recording in Dartmouth, Charles Austin at The Carleton in Halifax, and Leeroy Stagger at Neighbourhood Recorders in Langford, BC. "Rainy Day Janey" has a rickety, hand-spun charm, "High Summer" glows, "Iona" and "Let Me Go, Jo" are tender and close, and "The New Joys," a spoken-word piece, first appeared in April for National Poetry Month. The album was mixed at Fang and mastered at The Archive in Mineville, Nova Scotia.
He took it out on the One Real Reveal on Wheels tour from Nanaimo in September 2024, including two nights at Toronto's Great Hall. The sessions also included a stop in Bill and Betty Stevenson's living room, which, we're told, counts as a studio as long as somebody puts the kettle on.
