Jane's Addiction's 1990 classic Ritual de lo Habitual as a 30th anniversary 2LP set on clear vinyl, with "Been Caught Stealing" and "Stop!"
This Rocktober 2020 edition spreads the album over a 2LP set on clear vinyl for its 30th anniversary. Ritual de lo Habitual broke the Billboard 200 top 20, sold 500,000 copies in its first month and went double platinum.
Spanish for ritual of the usual, which is a modest title for a record that sounds nothing like the usual. Jane's Addiction's second album arrived in August 1990, co-produced by Dave Jerden and Perry Farrell, and it caught the LA band just as alternative rock was about to take over the world. Farrell even painted the cover art himself.
The album comes in two halves. The first is a run of hard, funky rock songs: "Stop!" bursts out of the gate, "Been Caught Stealing" (barking dog and all) became their biggest hit, and "No One's Leaving" and "Obvious" show off Dave Navarro's guitar and Stephen Perkins's drums. The second half is a long, dreamy suite dedicated to Farrell's friend Xiola Blue, from the epic "Three Days" to the violin-led "Of Course" and the closing "Classic Girl," with Eric Avery's bass anchoring the whole journey.
"Stop!" and "Three Days" went out as singles in early August 1990, a few weeks ahead of the album. Some shops wouldn't stock the original sleeve, so the band made a second "clean cover" with nothing on it but black text, including the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The tour behind it ran for thirteen months and took in headlining the first Lollapalooza, which is a fairly ambitious way to fill a summer.
