About the album

Jack Johnson made To The Sea in three weeks, split between his two solar-powered studios, The Mango Tree in Hawaii and the Solar Powered Plastic Plant in Los Angeles. It came out on his own Brushfire label, and it finds the surfer-songwriter turning the amps up a notch, adding electric guitar, organ, Wurlitzer and Mellotron to his easygoing acoustic sound.

"You And Your Heart" leads off with a punchy, upbeat groove, the title track rolls along on a loose, bluesy riff, and "At Or With Me" and "From The Clouds" are classic Johnson, warm and breezy. "My Little Girl" is a sweet lullaby, "Red Wine, Mistakes, Mythology" swings with a light touch, and "Anything But The Truth" keeps the mood light. Zach Gill, Adam Topol and Merlo Podlewski from his band co-produced with Robert Carranza.

Johnson has said the title nods to a father leading his son to the sea, a dive beneath the surface to understand yourself. AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine gave it four stars and heard a sleek daytime sheen in it. We can't promise solar power, but our turntables do run very nicely on a sunny afternoon.
