J. Cole: 4 Your Eyez Only [DREAMVILLE / INTERSCOPE]

Why you'll love it

4 Your Eyez Only went straight to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and is Cole's most personal, novel-like album: ten songs that turn out to be a message from a fallen friend to the daughter he left behind.

About the album

J. Cole has never been one for flashy singles, and 4 Your Eyez Only might be his boldest move yet: no features, mellow jazzy production (much of it his own), and a story that only reveals itself fully on the title track at the end. Much of the album is told from the perspective of a friend from North Carolina, trying to get out of the street life and be a good father.

"Neighbors" tackles the police raiding his own studio house in a wealthy neighbourhood, "Foldin Clothes" is a sweet song about domestic love, "Immortal" and "Deja Vu" bring the bounce, and the title track ties it all together in one of the most affecting closing songs in modern rap.
