Hiatus Kaiyote's 2012 debut Tawk Tomahawk on red transparent vinyl, with "Nakamarra," "Mobius Streak" and "Malika."
This Brainfeeder reissue comes on 140g red transparent vinyl with a bonus 7" carrying "Nakamarra" with Q-Tip and a Clever Austin remix of "Boom Child." That Q-Tip version earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance, a first for an Australian act in an R&B category.
Hiatus Kaiyote played their first gig at a Melbourne masquerade ball alongside sword swallowers and fire twirlers, which, for a debut, is a tough room. Nai Palm, Paul Bender, Simon Mavin and Perrin Moss had been a band for barely a year when they put this album out themselves in April 2012. Mavin had left The Bamboos to commit to it full time.
It's a gloriously restless record, hopping from neo-soul and jazz to psychedelia, lounge and rock inside a single song. "Mobius Streak" and "The World It Softly Lulls" set the tone, "Malika" and "Lace Skull" twist and turn, "Rainbow Rhodes" glows, and "Nakamarra" became the breakout. Taylor McFerrin passed it to Gilles Peterson, and soon Erykah Badu, Questlove and Prince were telling their followers to listen. Salaam Remi then licensed it for his new Flying Buddha label, adding the Q-Tip version of "Nakamarra."
Peterson named them Breakthrough Artists of the Year at his Worldwide Awards in 2013. Since then they've been sampled by everyone from Anderson .Paak to Drake, and the band has kept getting stranger in the best possible way.
