Gang Starr MC Guru's 1993 jazz-rap landmark Jazzmatazz Vol. 1, with Donald Byrd, Roy Ayers and Branford Marsalis: "Loungin'," "Trust Me" and "Le Bien, le Mal."
Jazzmatazz was one of the first albums to bring real jazz players into the studio with a rapper instead of just sampling them, and it helped launch the whole acid jazz and jazz-rap movement.
Guru was already a legend as the voice of Gang Starr when he decided to try something new: a hip hop album recorded with live jazz musicians. He called it "an experimental fusion of hip-hop and jazz," and he lined up a dream team: Donald Byrd, Roy Ayers, Branford Marsalis, Courtney Pine, Lonnie Liston Smith, N'Dea Davenport, Carleen Anderson and French rap star MC Solaar.
"Loungin'" with Donald Byrd is effortlessly cool, "Trust Me" (with N'Dea Davenport) and "No Time to Play" glide, and "Le Bien, le Mal" with MC Solaar is a bilingual classic. Smooth, smart and endlessly listenable.
