Glenn Gould's celebrated 1981 recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations, BWV 988, his second take on the piece that made him famous.
Toronto's own Glenn Gould is forever linked to the Goldberg Variations, and his 1981 recording is a slower, deeper and more reflective reading than his famous 1955 debut. One of the great piano recordings.
Glenn Gould made his name in 1955 with a dazzling, high-speed recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations. Returning to the work in 1981, he took a more spacious, contemplative approach, with tempos carefully related to one another across the whole set.
From the gentle opening Aria through the thirty variations and back to the Aria da capo, Gould's clarity, rhythmic drive and singular touch are breathtaking. Listen closely and you can hear his famous humming along.
