Clear vinyl edition of Fred again..'s Mercury Prize-shortlisted 2021 debut, built from lockdown voice notes and videos: "Marea (We've Lost Dancing)," "Kyle (I Found You)" and "Julia (Deep Diving)."
Actual Life turned found sounds, voice memos and Instagram clips from 2020 into some of the most emotional dance music of the decade. It was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize, and "Marea (We've Lost Dancing)" became an anthem.
Fred Gibson had spent years producing for Ed Sheeran, Stormzy and Brian Eno when lockdown hit, and he started making music out of whatever was around him: snippets of friends' voices, strangers' videos, phone calls and late-night thoughts. Each song is named after the person whose voice anchors it, and the album plays like a diary of a very strange year.
"Kyle (I Found You)" and "Julia (Deep Diving)" are euphoric and tender at the same time, "Marea (We've Lost Dancing)" with the Blessed Madonna became a rallying cry for clubs that couldn't open, and the whole record feels like a hug from a friend you haven't seen in ages. It launched one of the biggest stories in electronic music.
