About the album

The idea came in a car. Steven Ellison and Thundercat were driving around Los Angeles listening to George Duke, marvelling at how wild the playing was, and decided to make something just as fast and intense now. The result is a concept album about death and whatever comes next, made at Ellison's home with Ableton Live, a wall of Moogs, a Fender Rhodes and a Wurlitzer.

Thundercat plays bass on nearly every track, and the guest list is a jazz and hip hop summit: Herbie Hancock, Kamasi Washington, Snoop Dogg on "Dead Man's Tetris," Kendrick Lamar on "Never Catch Me," Angel Deradoorian, Niki Randa, Kimbra and Ellison's rapper alter ego Captain Murphy. "Theme" had the working title Jodorowsky, "Cold Dead" started as an iPhone voice memo, "Stirring" honours a late friend, and "Siren Song" was first written for Pharrell.

Mastering engineer Daddy Kev said it has the widest dynamic range of anything Ellison has made. For a record about the afterlife, it's remarkably full of life, which is probably the point.
