About the album

Most albums get road-tested after they're finished. Leslie Feist did it the other way round, writing and recording these songs while she played them in a live residency of the same name through 2021 and 2022. The work began after she adopted her daughter in 2019 and lost her father, and it's her first record since Pleasure.

"In Lightning" opens with pounding drums and massed voices, "Hiding Out In The Open" and "Love Who We Are Meant To" are hushed and close, and "Borrow Trouble" builds into a proper storm. Blake Mills, Robbie Lackritz and Mocky co-produced, Chilly Gonzales drops in on keyboards, and "Calling All The Gods" borrows lines from Emily Wilson's translation of the Odyssey.

Feist has been a fixture of Canadian music since her Broken Social Scene days, and Multitudes sounds like someone who knows exactly where the quiet is. Few albums can list Homer among their sources, and fewer still make him this easy to put on of a Sunday morning.
