About the album

Erykah Badu arrived in 1997 like she'd been beamed in from another era: a Dallas singer in a towering headwrap with a voice that made people compare her to Billie Holiday, and lyrics full of philosophy, numerology and sly humour. Baduizm, recorded partly with the Roots in Philadelphia, mixes jazz, hip hop and old-school soul into something warm, smoky and completely her own.

"On & On" won a Grammy and sent the album to No. 2 on the Billboard 200, "Next Lifetime" is one of the most beautiful slow jams of the '90s, and "Otherside of the Game" and "Appletree" are still sampled and covered constantly. Alongside D'Angelo and Maxwell, Badu helped create what came to be called neo soul, and this record is ground zero.
