Why you'll love it

This meeting of two giants is one of the most beautiful jazz albums ever made, and their "In a Sentimental Mood" is simply sublime.

This edition

  • Acoustic Sounds Series
  • Audiophile pressing
  • Verve / Impulse!

About the album

Recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's studio for Impulse!, the session paired Ellington's elegant piano with Coltrane's tenor and soprano saxophone, with rhythm sections drawn from both bands: Aaron Bell or Jimmy Garrison on bass and Sam Woodyard or Elvin Jones on drums.

"In a Sentimental Mood" is tender perfection, "Take the Coltrane" swings hard, "Big Nick" bounces on soprano, and "My Little Brown Book" and "Angelica" are graceful and warm.
