About the album

Dr. Dre spent over a decade being asked about his next album. In the end, it took a movie. While the N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton was being filmed, Dre found himself so inspired that he started heading to the studio at night, and the result is subtitled, fittingly, "A Soundtrack By Dr. Dre."

He gathered old friends and new names alike, and the guest list spans every era of his career, from N.W.A to the newest faces in Los Angeles. Kendrick Lamar lights up "Genocide" and "Deep Water," Eminem tears through "Medicine Man," Ice Cube reunites with Dre on "Issues," Snoop Dogg turns up on "One Shot One Kill" and "Satisfiction," and a then-rising Anderson .Paak steals scene after scene, most memorably on "Animals," which DJ Premier co-produced. King Mez, Justus, Marsha Ambrosius, Jon Connor and The Game round out the cast.

Behind the boards, Focus..., Dem Jointz, DJ Dahi, Cardiak, Trevor Lawrence Jr. and Theron Feemster help Dre build a dense, cinematic sound that feels like a tour of Compton past and present. It's a victory lap that keeps checking its lap times.
