Clipse's 2002 debut Lord Willin' as a 2LP set on silver vinyl, with "Grindin'" and "When the Last Time," produced by The Neptunes.
This silver 2LP set adds the two "Grindin'" remixes on Side D. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, went gold, and Rolling Stone ranked it No. 12 on its 100 Best Debut Albums list.
Getting dropped is usually the end of the story. For Pusha T and Malice it was the start: Elektra shelved their first album, Exclusive Audio Footage, and childhood friend Pharrell Williams scooped the Virginia brothers up for his new Star Trak imprint in 2001. A year of sessions later, Lord Willin' arrived as one of the leanest, coldest rap records of its decade.
The Neptunes produced every track, and Pharrell turns up on six of them. "Grindin'" is built from little more than a clattering lunchroom-table beat and became a summer Top 40 hit, "When the Last Time" climbed even higher, and "Ma, I Don't Love Her" and "Cot Damn" kept the singles coming. Faith Evans, Fabolous, Jadakiss, Styles P and Roscoe P. Coldchain all stop by, but the brothers never let anyone steal the microphone for long.
Pitchfork, Slant and Complex all put it among the best albums of the 2000s, and by 2009 it had sold close to a million copies. The beat for "Grindin'" still gets banged out on school desks across the land, which teachers have asked us to stop encouraging.
