About the album

clipping. is Daveed Diggs rapping at machine-gun speed over the work of producers William Hutson and Jonathan Snipes, who build beats from feedback, field recordings and anything else that makes a noise. The combination of musique concrète and gangsta rap sounds like it shouldn't work. It does, gloriously. The trio had put out a mixtape, Midcity, before Sub Pop signed them, and CLPPNG was their first proper studio album.

"Get Up" is built entirely around an alarm clock, "Dream" floats on a ringing bell, white noise and tape hiss, and "Work Work" with Cocc Pistol Cree is the closest thing to a club banger. "Body & Blood" is a grisly little thriller, "Story 2" is a breathless narrative, and "Inside Out" rides a skeletal, clanking beat. Gangsta Boo and King T both stop by. They even perform John Cage's Williams Mix with Tom Erbe.

Diggs went on to win a Tony for Hamilton in 2016. The locked grooves on Side D will play forever if you let them, which makes this the one record in the shop that technically never ends.
