Bummer, the 2021 debut album from Ontario rock duo Cleopatrick: ten riff-heavy songs in under half an hour, with "Family Van," "Good Grief" and "2008."
Luke Gruntz and Ian Fraser make a huge noise with guitar, drums and nothing else. "Family Van" reached No. 32 on the US Mainstream Rock chart, and Metacritic scored the album 72.
Two people should not be able to sound this big. Cleopatrick are Luke Gruntz on vocals and guitar and Ian Fraser on drums, a pair of Ontario friends who skipped the bass player and went straight for the riffs. Bummer, their first full-length, came out on Nowhere Special Recordings in June 2021.
"Good Grief" kicked things off as the first single, and Gruntz said it marked a new era for the band. "The Drake" takes aim at a few people from their hometown, "Family Van" was written after a bigger band lifted one of their songs, and "2008" is the one Gruntz called the most honest and vulnerable thing he'd written. "Victoria Park" opens the record and later got its own video. Jonwayne mixed it, and Greg Calbi and Steve Fallone mastered it.
Kerrang! praised its titanic riffs, and the record still hits like a slammed car door. They promoted "Family Van" with an online video game and an official PowerPoint presentation, making it the first rock single we know of that could also get you through a quarterly meeting.
