About the album

Donald Glover said he'd retire Childish Gambino as far back as 2017, and he meant it, eventually. First came Atavista, a finished version of 3.15.20, then this all-new farewell, written as the soundtrack to a Gilga film of the same name. Glover plays Bando Stone, a singer who stumbles into a post-apocalyptic world and teams up with a woman and her son to survive, and he called the record a big goodbye album. He started work on the album and the film after wrapping the final season of Atlanta in 2022.

He wanted anthems, songs built for big rooms full of people singing together, and he went wide on genre to get them. "Lithonia," named after the Georgia city, is a dramatic, guitar-driven rocker; "In the Night" brings in Jorja Smith and Amaarae. Chloe Bailey, Steve Lacy, Flo Milli, Fousheé and Yeat all turn up, and so does Glover's own son.

Critics praised the eclectic production and his vocals. Glover said he wasn't going to shy away from joy, since nobody on their deathbed thanks God they avoided being cringe. A man after our own heart; you should see our window displays.
