Cannibal Corpse's 1992 third album Tomb Of The Mutilated, the Buffalo death metal band's landmark with "Hammer Smashed Face," on white vinyl.
This limited white vinyl pressing comes with a double-sided fold-out poster and a lyric insert. Tomb Of The Mutilated is widely seen as a death metal landmark, and "Hammer Smashed Face" still closes the band's live sets.
It started with a carpool. Cannibal Corpse wrote the album in Buffalo, rehearsing every day (some songs took a week, others five), with Jack Owen and Alex Webster sharing the 45-minute drive to the practice space. Webster had come home from the Butchered At Birth tour determined to get better on bass, and the opening riffs of "Hammer Smashed Face" were the result.
Scott Burns recorded it at Morrisound in Tampa, the band's first session with the budget to work long days, and his wall-of-sound production is a big part of its reputation. Burns had Owen track every rhythm guitar for a tighter attack, the mix pushes Webster's bass right up front, and the songs follow more linear structures, with riffs that repeat like hooks. Chris Barnes growls over the top, Paul Mazurkiewicz drives the tempos, and "The Cryptic Stench" and "Beyond The Cemetery" show off the new precision.
The band even turned up in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective playing "Hammer Smashed Face," and longtime collaborator Vince Locke painted the cover. The movie cameo remains the album's most family-friendly appearance by some distance.
